John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

Renée Zellweger, a celebrated figure in the film industry, is slated to headline the new cinematic endeavor, 'A Woman in the Sun.' This compelling project brings together a formidable cast, including veteran actress Sissy Spacek and the emerging talent Mia Threapleton, under the direction of Julia Cox. The film's narrative centers on Claire Keating, portrayed by Zellweger, as she navigates the complexities of her life as a bartender on Nantucket. Her world is upended when her mother falls ill and her daughter returns home, compelling Claire to confront unresolved issues from her past and redefine her future.

Julia Cox, building on her success with 'Nyad,' takes on both writing and directing duties for 'A Woman in the Sun.' The film is a collaborative financing effort between Black Bear and Artists Equity, with Black Bear also handling distribution in North America and the U.K., and Elevation Pictures managing Canadian distribution. Production for the film is scheduled to kick off in September, and it will be introduced to international buyers at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. This venture marks a significant step for Big Picture Co., co-founded by Zellweger, as it expands its portfolio of character-driven commercial films.

The esteemed cast and production teams are enthusiastic about this project. Zellweger expressed her excitement for Cox’s vision and the script’s depth, emphasizing Big Picture Co.'s commitment to fostering promising filmmakers. Ben Affleck, CEO of Artists Equity, lauded Cox’s writing prowess and anticipated her directorial success, highlighting the film's profound exploration of family dynamics. Teddy Schwarzman, CEO of Black Bear, echoed these sentiments, praising Cox's artistic evolution and her ability to elicit rich performances from the cast, underscoring the universal appeal of the story.

The collaborative spirit and shared dedication to impactful storytelling evident in 'A Woman in the Sun' serve as an inspiring example of artistic synergy. This production not only promises to deliver a powerful cinematic experience but also highlights the importance of supporting diverse voices and narratives within the film community, fostering growth and innovation in the industry.
