Oscar winners Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek will co-star with emerging talent Mia Threapleton in "A Woman in the Sun," an upcoming drama slated for its international market debut at Cannes. This project marks the directorial debut of Julia Cox, known for her work on "Nyad." Black Bear and Artist Equity are partnering with Zellweger's Big Picture Co. to finance the film, which delves into a multi-generational narrative exploring themes of love, struggle, and personal growth. Production is scheduled to commence in September 2026, underscoring a collaborative effort to bring this compelling story to the big screen.

Renée Zellweger, in addition to her starring role, is also taking on producing duties alongside Carmella Casinelli from Big Picture Co. and Kim Roth, with Greg Gertmenian serving as co-producer. Zellweger expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting Big Picture Co.'s commitment to supporting promising filmmakers like Julia Cox. She praised Cox's script as a "storytelling treasure" and lauded her directorial instincts, anticipating a successful collaboration. The project signifies a pivotal moment for Cox as she transitions from acclaimed writer to feature film director.

"A Woman in the Sun" centers on Claire Keating, a Nantucket bartender navigating the challenges of a shrinking middle class. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her mother falls ill and her daughter returns home, forcing Claire to confront her past and forge a new future. The story is a profound exploration of human relationships, encompassing the joys, sorrows, and humor found in deep connections. This intimate portrayal of family dynamics and resilience is expected to resonate with audiences.

The film's financing structure involves a co-financing agreement between Black Bear and Artists Equity. Black Bear will manage the distribution rights for North America and the UK, while Elevation Pictures will handle distribution in Canada. Ben Affleck, CEO of Artists Equity, voiced his confidence in Julia Cox's abilities, stating that "A Woman in the Sun" will showcase her talent as a director, following her established success as a writer. Affleck emphasized Artists Equity's mission to support filmmakers at all career stages and expressed eagerness to contribute to the film's realization.

This collaboration also reunites Cox with Black Bear, building on the success of their previous project, the 2023 film "Nyad," which garnered two Academy Award nominations and a WGA nod for Cox. Teddy Schwarzman, CEO of Black Bear, lauded Cox as a "world-caliber director" and expressed his belief in her vision for "A Woman in the Sun." He emphasized the story's unique yet universal appeal and anticipated powerful performances from the distinguished cast. The combined support from Black Bear and Artists Equity aims to deliver a memorable cinematic experience.

The casting of Renée Zellweger, Sissy Spacek, and Mia Threapleton brings together a formidable ensemble, promising nuanced and impactful performances that will capture the emotional depth of the narrative. The film's compelling story, coupled with the talent involved both in front of and behind the camera, positions "A Woman in the Sun" as a highly anticipated entry at Cannes and a significant new addition to the film landscape. The project celebrates the complexities of familial bonds and the strength found in overcoming adversity.
