The Quest for the "Real Emily" Begins
A friendly, yet spirited, disagreement has recently surfaced on social platforms regarding the true identity of the inspiration for Emily Blunt's standout portrayal of Emily Charlton in 'The Devil Wears Prada.' This character, a sharp and demanding first assistant, returns in the much-anticipated sequel, prompting renewed interest in her origins.
Leslie Fremar's Claim to the Role
On one side of the discussion is Leslie Fremar, a renowned celebrity stylist who previously held the position of Anna Wintour's first assistant at Vogue in 1999. This was the same year Lauren Weisberger, author of the bestselling novel that inspired the film, served as Wintour's second assistant. Fremar recently shared on Vogue's 'The Run-Through' podcast that the character of Emily Charlton drew heavily from her own experiences and interactions, admitting to having been rather stern with Weisberger during their time together, much like her fictional counterpart.
Jill Demling: Another Contender for Emily's Persona
However, the narrative isn't so straightforward. The internet is also buzzing with theories suggesting that Jill Demling, Vogue's long-serving entertainment and casting director, might be the authentic muse for Emily. Evidence points to Demling predating Fremar as Wintour's first assistant and having hired Fremar as her replacement. Demling was reportedly even more rigorous with other assistants. In a recent interview with 'The Daily Mail,' Demling noted, "I managed [Wintour's] office quite strictly." She also mentioned Fremar's initial apprehension about taking over her role due to her established organizational style.
Demling's Playful Evasion and Strategic Positioning
Despite the persistent speculation, Demling has refrained from explicitly claiming the 'Emily' title. Instead, she has subtly deflected the rumors while cleverly capitalizing on the resulting media attention. On her podcast, 'Going Rogue' – which conveniently released an episode featuring former Vogue assistants, including Fremar, coinciding with the release of 'Prada 2' – she acknowledged Fremar as the "real Emily." Demling further distanced herself on Instagram, stating, "No quotes about 'I'm the real Emily' — because I never actually said that."
Other Characters and Their Inspirations
The debate extends beyond Emily. William Norwich, a long-time Vogue editor, has often been associated with the character of Nigel Kipling. He frequently recounts how people introduce him as "Billy — he’s the guy in 'The Devil Wears Prada.' He’s the real Stanley Tucci," attributing positive aspects to the character's influence on his personal life. Yet, veteran fashion editor Paul Cavaco is also often cited as Nigel's inspiration, although Cavaco believes the character is a blend of Norwich and Vogue writer Hamish Bowles.
Miranda Priestly: A Persistent Link to Anna Wintour
Regarding Meryl Streep's portrayal of Miranda Priestly, the actress has consistently attempted to detach the character from Anna Wintour, asserting that her inspiration came from directors she had worked with. However, this claim is widely met with skepticism, likely even by Wintour herself, highlighting the enduring perception of Miranda as a thinly veiled representation of the iconic editor.
