Andana Films has secured the global sales rights for "Detention," Guillaume Massart's newest documentary feature, just as it prepares for its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival's ACID program. This French production offers a unique perspective by immersing viewers in the training regimen of prison officers within France, examining how their speech, actions, and perspectives gradually conform to the institutional framework they are entering.

The film, brought to life by producer Céline Loiseau from TS Productions, has been enthusiastically welcomed into the ACID Cannes selection. Loiseau highlighted the film's immersive quality, noting Massart’s skill in delving into the core of the correctional system through the experiences of the trainees, subtly revealing the societal structures that underpin it, all while keeping the actual prison environment off-screen. Stephan Riguet of Andana Films expressed long-standing admiration for Massart's cinematic contributions, viewing the film's inclusion in ACID Cannes as a significant acknowledgment of this enduring creative partnership.

The ACID committee, represented by Maxime Jean-Baptiste, Thomas Paulot, and Paola Termine, praised Massart for his bold choice in centering the narrative on prison guards. They noted how "Detention" establishes a self-contained institutional setting that compels audiences to confront the intricate, bureaucratic mechanisms of repression. The committee lauded Massart’s ability to capture the guards' dialogues, their silences, and the nascent fissures in their institutional discourse, thereby exposing the inherent chasm between theoretical principles and practical realities within the system.

This documentary serves as a powerful testament to the often-unseen forces that mold individuals within rigid structures. By focusing on the human element within a carceral system, it encourages a deeper reflection on societal norms, justice, and the very essence of human adaptation. Such artistic endeavors are vital, prompting us to look beyond the surface and consider the profound impacts of institutional environments on the human spirit, fostering empathy and critical thought.
