Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

20th Century Studios is preparing to expand the renowned 'Planet of the Apes' series, with a new cinematic entry taking shape under fresh leadership and a unique narrative approach.

Acclaimed director Matt Shakman, recognized for his work on Marvel Studios' 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' has been entrusted with the helm of this upcoming 'Planet of the Apes' installment. Josh Friedman, who contributed to both 'First Steps' and the successful 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,' is slated to pen the screenplay. Interestingly, this new feature film is confirmed not to be a direct continuation of 'Kingdom,' which garnered nearly $400 million globally and was widely considered a triumph, building upon the reboot trilogy that centered on the ape leader Caesar.

While a potential sequel to 'Kingdom' has been discussed, its current status remains uncertain. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, veteran producers from previous 'Apes' films, are involved in this new project alongside Shakman, with Scott Aversano, Executive Vice President of Production for 20th Century Studios, overseeing the production. Friedman's consistent collaboration with 20th Century also includes his screenwriting contributions to blockbusters like 'Avatar: The Way of Water' and 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' solidifying his role as a key creative force. Shakman's past achievements include directing Marvel Studios' 'WandaVision' and the pilot for Apple's Godzilla series, 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,' highlighting his diverse directorial experience.

The continuous evolution and reimagining of classic franchises like 'Planet of the Apes' showcase Hollywood's enduring commitment to storytelling innovation. By bringing together experienced talent and fresh perspectives, these projects aim to captivate new audiences while honoring the rich legacy that has resonated across generations. The forward-looking approach to narrative development, coupled with a respect for the series' roots, exemplifies the dynamic spirit of cinematic creation.
