The Golden Globes have implemented substantial modifications to their rules for the upcoming awards season, specifically addressing the growing presence of artificial intelligence in film. These updated regulations, announced on Thursday, do not automatically exclude productions that utilize AI; instead, they focus on transparency and the fundamental nature of human creativity in eligible works. A key requirement is that all submissions must now include a detailed disclosure outlining any use of generative AI throughout the production process.
Regarding acting categories, the new guidelines stipulate that performances must be predominantly derived from the credited performer's work. This implies that a performance enhanced by AI could still be considered, provided the core creative input remains human. However, performances where AI substantially generates or creates the portrayal are explicitly deemed ineligible. For other craft categories, eligibility hinges on the primary creative contributions originating from human individuals, with AI serving a supportive or enhancing function rather than replacing human authorship. This nuanced approach stands in contrast to the Academy's more stringent rules, which now require entirely human-authored screenplays for Oscar consideration.
The Golden Globes' embrace of these new rules follows a period of significant introspection and change for the organization. After a controversy regarding racial exclusion within the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2021, the awards underwent a broadcast hiatus and a comprehensive restructuring, including the dissolution of the HFPA and the implementation of diversity initiatives. This ongoing transformation seeks to foster a more inclusive and forward-thinking environment. The 2027 Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, January 10, to be simulcast on CBS and Paramount+, with nominations slated for announcement on December 7 of this year. This progressive stance on AI reflects a proactive effort to navigate technological advancements while upholding the essence of human artistic endeavor in the evolving landscape of cinema.
