Unveiling Tomorrow's Cinema: The Fantastic Pavilion's Bold Vision
Establishing a Nexus for Genre Cinema at Cannes
The Fantastic Pavilion is increasingly asserting its influence as a crucial international center for genre filmmaking at the Cannes Marché du Film. Returning for its fourth iteration, it introduces an enriched array of industry initiatives, strategic global alliances, and market-focused events.
Remarkable Growth and Impact in the Film Industry
Following its most impactful year in 2025, which attracted nearly 4,000 attendees and facilitated 23 significant business transactions across production, sales, and distribution, the Pavilion is intensifying its efforts to serve as a central meeting point for the global fantastic film community. Since its inception in 2023, the Fantastic Pavilion has seen over 70% growth in attendance and more than doubled its volume of business deals and participating sales companies over three editions. In 2025, approximately 26% of all Marché du Film participants engaged with the Pavilion, which hosted 40 film festivals, 47 production entities, 28 sales agents and distributors, four streaming services and broadcasters, and 11 film commissions, academic bodies, and non-profit organizations.
Introducing Innovative Services: The Concierge by the Fantastic Pavilion
Described by its organizers as "the heart of genre at the Marché," the Pavilion is more than just an event venue; it is a continuous operational framework for fantastic cinema. To support this vision, the new service, The Concierge by the Fantastic Pavilion, will operate throughout the year, offering dedicated assistance to all collaborators and clients.
Embracing New Storytelling Formats: Vertical Cinema Showcase
A significant new feature for 2026 is the Fantastic Pavilion Vertical Cinema Showcase, which highlights emerging mobile-first storytelling and short-form genre content. This initiative acknowledges the rapidly changing media landscape, where digital platforms, social ecosystems, and mobile viewing habits are reshaping how stories are consumed and distributed globally. The vertical 9:16 format, once experimental, is now recognized as a potent storytelling medium, capable of engaging international audiences while maintaining distinct artistic integrity.
A Global Platform for Vertical Filmmaking
Debuting during the Marché du Film within the Fantastic Pavilion, the Vertical Cinema showcase will feature an international selection of horror, fantasy, and science-fiction projects specifically designed for vertical viewing. The inaugural showcase will include creators and projects from over 15 countries spanning North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, with 12 filmmakers expected to present their work in person. This initiative connects a new generation of creators, content producers, and filmmakers exploring mobile-native storytelling and microdramas with producers, distributors, platforms, and international buyers interested in innovative digital entertainment and alternative distribution models.
Leading the Future of Short-Form Content
The Vertical section is poised to become a sustained platform for discovering groundbreaking genre narratives and novel cinematic expressions. This positions the Fantastic Pavilion at the forefront of discussions regarding the future of short-form and mobile-first audiovisual content, according to its organizers.
Expanding International Alliances and Collaborations
The expansion of Vertical Cinema also highlights the Pavilion’s evolving international partnership strategy. Organizers point to new collaborations with the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival and the Costa Rica Media Market’s Fantastic Lab, marking a deeper engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean to foster regional talent discovery and dissemination. The Pavilion has also strengthened its ties with leading international genre organizations and markets, including Fantasia Frontières, Fantastic 7 Sitges, and the Méliès International Festivals Federation, and added new strategic partners such as Pressman Film, The Horror Collective, and BloodStream.
Acknowledging Industry Visionaries: The Keys to the Pavilion Award
The event has also confirmed the second season of "The Seance," a genre-focused series produced in collaboration with Collider.com, further enhancing the Pavilion's media and industry alliance platform. This year, the event recognizes influential figures who have shaped contemporary genre cinema by honoring filmmaker Xavier Gens (known for "Frontier(s)," "Cold Skin," and "Under Paris") with its prestigious Keys to the Pavilion Award. Past honorees include David Cronenberg, Eli Roth, J.A. Bayona, Simon Boswell, and Álex de la Iglesia. This accolade has become a defining institutional recognition for filmmakers and artists contributing to the global genre landscape.
Cultivating a Thriving International Genre Ecosystem
Pablo Guisa Koestinger, executive director of the Fantastic Pavilion, stated, "We envisioned the Fantastic Pavilion as a gathering place where the global genre industry could not only celebrate fantastic cinema but actively engage in business, discover projects, and forge lasting collaborations. What we are witnessing now is the maturation of a genuine international ecosystem for genre film within Cannes."
Highlighting Successful Returning Initiatives: IP Showcase and Round Robin
Returning initiatives this year include the third edition of the Genre IP Showcase and the second installment of the Fantastic Round Robin. The Genre IP Showcase, one of the Pavilion's fastest-growing segments, has increasingly become a catalyst for remake opportunities and international adaptation deals. Organizers note significant industry interest in titles like "The Coffee Table," and cite previous showcase successes such as "Julia’s Eyes" (produced by Guillermo del Toro) and "Knock Knock" (produced and directed by Eli Roth) as examples of genre properties that continue to drive international remake and adaptation discussions. The 2026 edition will also feature additional projects, ranging from cult classics to emerging genre properties. An early triumph from this initiative is "The Turkish Coffee Table," a Turkish adaptation of "The Coffee Table," which achieved a successful international festival run followed by a theatrical release, demonstrating the growing commercial viability of globally sourced genre intellectual property. Two additional adaptation projects stemming from previous Pavilion discussions are currently in development.
Fostering New Connections and Global Collaborations
The Fantastic Round Robin will also return for its second edition, continuing its mission to connect emerging genre projects with international companies, financiers, distributors, and festival representatives. Projects and participating companies are expected from various regions, including Turkey, Mexico, the U.S., Spain, Norway, and Poland, highlighting the increasingly international nature of genre financing, co-production, and distribution.
Engaging Discussions on Genre Film's Future
The 2026 edition will further enhance its industry programming with a series of panels and discussions exploring the evolving landscape of genre production, intellectual property, and representation within the global market. Among this year's events is "It's Alive! Remake, Reboot, Reborn: The Business of Genre IP," presented by Fantastic Pavilion and Mórbido. This panel will delve into the creative, legal, and commercial forces driving the resurgence of genre remakes, reboots, and reimaginations. Another featured panel, "Women in Genre: Shaping Careers, Opening Doors & Building Power," presented in collaboration with Yes She Cannes, will gather directors, festival leaders, and distribution executives to discuss mentorship, career development, and collective opportunities for women in the genre industry, also showcasing selected projects from the Yes She Cannes network.
Vibrant Networking and Celebratory Events
The 2026 edition will once again host the Fantastic Galas, networking events, showcases, industry panels, and the third edition of Fantastic Night, the official Cannes genre gathering that has become one of the market's signature after-hours events. Further speakers, panels, screenings, and special guests will be announced leading up to Cannes. As Guisa Koestinger emphasized, "What started as a community space has transformed into an essential infrastructure for the genre business itself. Community remains paramount, but now this community is generating projects, partnerships, remakes, and international opportunities on a scale we initially only envisioned."
