Nintendo has recently declared an upcoming price adjustment for its highly popular Switch 2 gaming console. This strategic move, impacting various international markets, is a response to escalating memory and storage expenses within the technology and gaming industries. Despite the impending price increase, the console continues to demonstrate remarkable sales performance, having nearly reached the 20 million unit milestone globally since its introduction. The company also celebrated a period of substantial financial growth, primarily fueled by robust sales of both hardware and software. However, projections for the coming fiscal year suggest a potential downturn in overall sales.
Nintendo Switch 2 Console Sees Price Jump to $500 in U.S. Market as Sales Approach 20 Million Mark
In a significant announcement made on Friday, May 8, 2026, Nintendo revealed its decision to raise the retail price of the Switch 2 gaming console. Commencing September 1, 2026, the console will be available for $499.99 in the United States, marking a $50 increase from its initial launch price of $449.99 on June 5, 2025. This price adjustment is attributed to the mounting costs associated with memory and storage components, a trend observed across the broader tech and gaming landscapes.
Beyond the U.S., similar price hikes are slated for other key markets. In Japan, the price will ascend to 59,980 yen from 49,980 yen, effective May 25. Canadian consumers will see the price rise to $679.99 from $629.99, while in Europe, the console's cost will move from 469.99 euros to 499.99 euros. The increases in Canada and Europe are set to align with the U.S. adjustment in the autumn season.
Furthermore, Nintendo confirmed an increase in the subscription fees for its Nintendo Switch Online service in Japan, with plans for a similar adjustment in South Korea. Nintendo's President, Shuntaro Furukawa, extended his apologies for any inconvenience this might cause to customers and stakeholders, expressing gratitude for their understanding.
This pricing news coincides with Nintendo's latest financial earnings report, which highlighted the impressive sales of the Switch 2, with 19.86 million units sold globally by the end of March. The original Switch console also contributed positively, selling 3.8 million units over the past year. In terms of software, Nintendo reported selling 48.71 million Switch 2 games and an additional 136.91 million Switch games within the last twelve months. The fiscal year, concluding March 31, 2026, saw an astounding 98.6% increase in overall revenue for the company. However, looking ahead to the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, Nintendo anticipates an 11.4% decrease in sales.
Nintendo expressed satisfaction with the Switch 2's initial performance, stating, "Nintendo Switch 2 got off to a good start following its launch in June 2025." The company is committed to sustaining this momentum by continuously introducing new titles and maintaining interest in existing ones. Upcoming releases for the Switch 2 include 'Yoshi and the Mysterious Book' in May, 'Star Fox' in June, and 'Splatoon Raiders' in July, with other publishers also planning to launch a diverse range of games.
The announcement underscores the dynamic nature of the gaming industry, where market forces like component costs directly influence consumer pricing. While the price adjustment may be met with mixed reactions, Nintendo's continued commitment to expanding its game library and fostering an engaged user base suggests a strong long-term vision for the Switch 2 platform.
