Asia is poised to become the dominant force in the global expansion of ethylene glycol production capacity by 2030. This growth is primarily fueled by escalating domestic demand and continuous capital injection into the petrochemical infrastructure across the continent. Ethylene glycol, a critical intermediate, plays a pivotal role in the creation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester fibers, with extensive applications in the textile, plastics, and automotive industries.

The anticipated surge in Asia's ethylene glycol sector is largely attributed to numerous large-scale initiatives slated for China and India. These nations are strategically investing to meet their internal consumption needs and to bolster their independence in this crucial chemical manufacturing. China is expected to lead this charge, with eight new projects projected to become operational within the specified timeframe. A significant portion of this additional capacity will come from a planned project by SABIC in Fujian province, scheduled to commence operations this year.

Further contributions to China's ethylene glycol capacity will emanate from facilities such as the Caofeidian Petrochemical Industry Base in Tangshan, Hebei province, and Zhejiang Petrochemical on Daishan Island, Zhoushan. The Hebei project is slated for completion in 2030, while the Zhejiang facility is expected to begin production this year, further solidifying China's position in the market.

Meanwhile, India's capacity enhancements are set to originate from four distinct projects, with three of them located in the state of Gujarat. Nayara Energy Ltd and Valor Petrochemicals Ltd each have a project anticipated to go online in 2027 and 2029, respectively. Additionally, Reliance Industries Ltd has announced a third project in Gujarat, expected to be operational by the close of the current decade, underscoring India's commitment to increasing its production footprint.

The fourth and most substantial capacity addition in India is projected to come from Haldia Petrochemicals' project in Tamil Nadu. This particular undertaking is not only expected to significantly boost India's output but also represents the largest individual capacity increase globally. Currently awaiting final approval, this major initiative is likely to begin operations in 2030, with Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd acting as the sole operator and equity holder.

By 2030, the Asian continent is set to significantly reshape the worldwide landscape of ethylene glycol manufacturing. Driven by the strategic investments and growing industrial requirements of its leading economies, particularly China and India, the region is establishing itself as a central hub for the production of this essential chemical. This expansion underscores Asia's commitment to fulfilling its own industrial demands and strengthening its global market presence in the petrochemical sector.
